To-Go Smoothie Cups

Summer is suppose to be lazy mornings, relaxing by the pool, and lazy evenings… but apparently my calendar missed that memo!  My summer seems to be flying by in crazy days of running around.  Most days, if I don’t take my breakfast in a cup, I don’t get it.  And a cup of coffee really isn’t an appropriate breakfast.

One of the best things about school starting is after I get up early and get the kids off to school, I get to come home and enjoy a quiet breakfast.  Summer I am up early running around, but I don’t get to leave my kids and come home.  So I have to take my breakfast with me.

I really love green smoothies, and sometimes they accompany a side of toast with avocado for breakfast or a salad for lunch, but sometimes they have to be my breakfast or lunch.

I know I could buy a cute cold to-go mug, but I don’t have room in my cupboard for any more cups, so I had to make my own to-go smoothie cups.  I already had some plastic Tupperware cups in my cupboard that had nice tight lids.  I use them sometimes to store the last cup of milk when the mostly empty gallon doesn’t fit, but otherwise, why would I need a lid for a cup?

I can’t drink with a lid… but when I need to take a smoothie to-go, a lid is a must.  I seem to spill a lot!  Seriously, I spill my beverage as soon as I am too far from my house to turn back and change, and I alway spill the bright red/purple smoothie.  I never spill water on me.  So a lid is perfect for my smoothie cups, but I cannot remove a lid to drink cause I would spill it.  So I need to use a straw.  This is where my brilliant DIY mind comes in… put a hole in the lid for my straw!

Okay, maybe it’s not that brilliant, but I am very happy that I actually thought about it.  I grabbed a drill, used a drill bit that was barely larger than the straws I like to use (I like the milkshake or smoothie straws that are extra big).  Then I drilled holes in the lids!  Brilliant right?  Okay, sometimes it’s the little things that make me happy.  But having the little hole in the lid is really convenient for me.

So now I have these great new to-go smoothie cups and can pack up my breakfast to go.  I will be able to at least eat healthy during these last weeks of summer until I can enjoy breakfast once again!

You know, I never thought I would be that mom who couldn’t wait for school to start, but oh my, I’m excited!  My baby starts preschool and so I get 2 days a week with a couple free hours and that just seems like heaven to me 🙂

I hope you don’t find my “brilliant” idea too “duh”, but I am excited so I had to share.

Tupperware actually makes those with holes in them now(with the spillproof rubber stopper in the hole), they are fantastic!!!

If I have to buy more I will make sure to get them pre-holed. But I love being able to use the ones I already have.

Great idea! If you don't have a drill handy, I bet that a sharp "hole-punch" (combined with a bit of muscle strength) would also do the same thing! Keep up the awesome DIY'ing!! ????

Ha ha, I am pretty sure the pretty colors are the reason I bought them in the first place.

Where did you find those cups with the lids?

I know the feeling of being excited for a couple hours to yourself. My youngest went to preschool 3 days a week last year, so I got 2 1/2 hours to myself each of those days. This year he starts all-day kindergarten. 7 hours a day to myself? Actually, I feel a little sad that my baby is growing up a little too fast for me. Enjoy!

Hello Erin! The cups are Tupperware brand. Seven hours a day to yourself soon... I can only imagine the amazing things you will be able to accomplish :) I am two years away from my baby going into kindergarten so I am going to enjoy my 2 1/2 hours and love the time I get with her afterwards because pretty soon I will be where you are, happy-sad about the next step!

Brilliant. Totally brilliant! I would never have thought to drill a hole in the lid of a Tuperware cup to turn it into a smoothie cup. Thanks so much for sharing at my Grandma Ideas Sharing Time link party. I really appreciate your participation.
