We have older, low vanities, and we're going to refresh them with a coat of paint on the base, and add new tops with leftovers from a granite/marble place - they'll cut to fit, and it's inexpensive if you use their leftovers. They have tons of leftover cuts in all sorts of colors. To get the some extra height, we'll use vessel sinks. I can't really replace the bases because when we bought the house, the bathrooms were carpeted. I ripped them out and put down porcelain tile - it's around the vanities, and I'm not willing to take a chance on destroying my tile floors to refit with a new vanity base that won't quite fit the old footprint.

That is a great idea! I haven't tried using leftover granite/marble yet, but you better believe I will ;). And using the vessel sinks adds so much height, you will love them!
